Before You Spend Thousands on a Course or Mentorship, read this (My Experience)

A few weeks ago, a friend asked if he should drop $10,000 on a mentorship program.

Oof…that’s a lot of money. I know.

I felt the pressure as soon as I read the question.

We’ve been friends for a couple of years, coming up together in the online business world.

Different paths, but both engineers figuring out how to grow our online education platforms, in addition to excelling in our day jobs.

As we started talking, I felt he was hesitant. And rightly so…

But it wasn’t because he didn’t believe in mentorship or investing in himself, but because somehow it didn’t feel right.

The more we talked, the more I thought he wanted what most of us look for in life; validation, assurance, or who knows, maybe even permission—to make that kind of call.

(I get it. I’ve been there, too.)

So I asked him a few questions:

  • What’s your main goal with it?
  • How much money has your business already made?
  • What do you expect to gain—skills, access, or time savings?

As he answered, it became clear he wasn’t fully sold.

And I noticed the following, based on my own experience investing $10K on a course:

My friend’s pain of staying where he was just wasn’t big enough to justify the cost.

That is, he wasn’t desperate enough to invest that kind of money.

That’s when I shared something I’ve learned:

If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.

Because the truth is, when you’re truly ready—whether it’s for a course, a job, or a big life decision—you don’t need convincing.

Unless you have a spouse, you really don’t need to talk to anyone.

You just know.

You just know the pain of standing still outweighs the fear of moving forward.

And if you have to talk yourself into a decision, you’re probably not ready yet—or it’s just not aligned.

Of course, this doesn’t just apply to business.

It’s the same with finances, career moves, and even personal choices. Sometimes, the smartest move isn’t jumping in—it’s waiting until clarity makes the answer obvious.

Clarity saves time, money, and regret. Hesitation is often intuition saying, “Not yet.”

Investing in yourself is powerful—but only when your logic and emotions are in alignment.

So remember: if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.

Keep moving forward,

Alex
